In the Campania region, the tomato has been used in cooking for centuries, long before the rest of the world thought to eat the fruit.

During its introduction to northern Europe in the 17th Century, it was assumed that the tomato was poisonous, mistakenly classified as a member of the deadly nightshade family, and the tomato was shunned, its red berries, a warning to all who ate it. Also in northern Europe, food was placed on pewter plates,  & when tomatoes were served on pewter plates, the natural high acidity in the tomatoes would leach lead from the plate & contributed to death caused by lead poisoning.

The poor of the Campania region did not eat from pewter plates, so made most of the fruit,  the climate perfect for growing and cultivating  the crop, and used it in so many different ways. It’s unsurprising that pomodoro, a corruption of the word golden apple, was and still is, a rich form of income.

Tomatoes are a major source of the antioxidant lycopene, which has been linked to many health benefits. By consuming tomatoes in all of its forms, it can help risk reduce heart disease & cancer. Tomatoes also contain Vitamin C, Vitamin K & potassium. An average sized tomato, contains only 20 calories!

Ingredients: Tomatoes & citric acid

Store in a cool, dry place away from heat sources & exposure to direct sunlight. Once opened, keep refrigerated, & use within 3 days.

Suitable for vegans.

Nutritional information per 100g: 25kcal, 108kJ, 1.6g protein, 4.3g of carbohydrates, 0.2% fat
