Limoncello, the flavour of Sorrento
Limoncello is an Italian lemon liqueur mainly produced in Southern Italy, especially in the region around the Gulf of Naples, the Sorrentine Peninsula and the coast of Amalfi. Limoncello is made from the zest of ‘Ovale di Sorrento’ lemons.
Lemon peel without the pith are steeped in grain alcohol until the oil is released. The resulting yellow liquid is then mixed with pure neutral alcohol.
Gioia Luisa is based in the Sorrento Gulf which is famed for the flavour and uniqueness of its lemons. Only companies using these unique lemons are granted the IGP Sorrento.
An excellent digestif if served cold, Limoncello is also pleasing at room temperature, perhaps mixed with tonic water or champagne. Frequently it is also used on ice cream and fruit salads.
In Campania, where it is mainly produced, Limoncello is usually served at the end of lunch or dinner, almost like the social ritual of drinking coffee.
